Combining elements of Electronica, Drum N’ Bass and Ambient Pop, this trio from NYC has created a unique hybrid of sound that can only be described as atmospheric, yet danceable. From time-to-time, a band sets out to change the way people listen to music. Not concerned with categories or the status quo, SevenMinusZero (all one word) is organic and not manufactured. Merging the ecstatic vocals of Alicia Eileen and Janell Rodgriguez with the distinctive production style of instrumentalist Fletcher, SMZ creates a cinematic journey of words and music. A classically trained pianist and violinist, Alicia Eileen has been performing with her family since the age of four. In college, she performed in Musical Theater and participated in various choirs and dance ensembles. Since graduating, she has continued to write and perform her original music. For the last year, she has been working on a solo project produced by Mark Beauchemin (formally of SR-71). Inspired by members of his musical family at an early age, Fletcher learned to play the drums and trumpet. In college, he received a degree in film, but the itch to create music never left him. Later, he would go on to produce and direct two independent features (which he also scored). An experienced audio engineer and programmer, Fletcher brings a new dynamic to studio production, which gives SMZ its unique sound. Born and raised in the South Bronx, Hip Hop surrounded this daughter of a horn player and a dancer, but Janell was attracted to a different beat. Developing her singing talents at an early age, she continued to hone her skills by singing in both high school and church choirs. In college she participated in Musical Theater. Prior to joining SMZ, she was working on solo material of Industrial- and-Jungle based music.

Five years ago the BPI, the UK record labels' trade body, had some gloomy news: only one-third of the music acquired in the country the previous year came through legitimate channels. One third went in pirate discs, and the other through illicit downloads. Hearing the news at the time, I observed to Peter Jamieson, then head of the BPI, that his members' business was doomed. How could it ...
